What are the skills and responsibilities of a video game creative director?

The creative director is the boss level of game design where you are setting the creative course for more than just a single project or working on a large franchise. For this example, I'm going to pick an interest of mine, prohibition era Chicago, as a quick backgrounder, prohibition outlawed alcohol in the US from 1920 until 1933, since people still wanted alcohol however, it gave rise to all kinds of criminal enterprises, so let's say this is the setting and theme for our game, what's it going to be about, what role does the player play? Is the player a police officer, trying to take down the bad guys or is the player a bad guy, trying to build her criminal empire? Maybe the player's a cop playing both sides of the fence or a secret informant and to show you the possible scope of a single idea, maybe our player's a time traveler from the future or even a ghost. From just a single theme, we now have at least four possible game ideas.


Historical inspirations for your game

History is an endless repository of game ideas, there's absolutely no end to the inspiration one can find. History might not sound like a place to look for a game idea, but I can assure you that many game designers find inspiration in history, in fact, if you look at the list of best-selling games, you'll find a lot of them are based on historical events or a designer's interpretation of how something might go in the future. Jobs are another source of game ideas, from Railroad Tycoon to FarmVille to Guitar Hero to Surgeon Simulator, all of these games model a particular job or business, in general games allow the player to grow over time and demonstrate mastery over the game, what better way is there to do that, than a business which starts small and grows over time? Remember, when you're thinking about your game ideas, you don't have to figure out all the finer points right now, in fact it's best if you don't, good game ideas tend to come together easily over time.

How to create assets and graphics for your game

 Like movies and books, games have genres too, jobs and businesses would fall into the simulation genre of games, some popular genres include role playing games like Final Fantasy and World of Warcraft and first-person shooter games, like Call of Duty and the Halo series. When thinking of ideas for games, some experienced designers start with genre, because they've developed an expertise in that genre over their careers, if you start with genre, ask yourself, what makes my game different from other games in this genre? And of course, it's critical to know your genre inside and out, what makes an RPG an RPG? Do your research, when you have an idea, ask yourself if there's something innovative about it, innovation is the key, if you want your game to stand out. Sometimes new game ideas come from just thinking about a specific type of play, think about different styles of play for a moment, rolling a ball around or running, these are things humans do for fun and that makes them perfect to turn into games, we call these things mechanics. A mechanic is a rule or action in game, games like Temple Run and Subway Surfers are built around the running mechanic, if we picked rolling a ball around as a mechanic, you could make a game like Katamari Damacy, Super Monkey Ball and every pinball game ever made. Ultimately games are about wish fulfillment, they allow us to do things we could not normally do and to go places we couldn't normally go, working game designers often keep a digital scrapbook of places, events, people and things they find most interesting, they may have no attached game to them at present, but over time, these characters and places find their way into our games.
